Industrial PC with Multiple Serial Ports for Automation Cell Integration | MPC-2025
Industrial PC with Multiple Serial Ports for Automation Cell Integration | MPC-2025
An automation cell becomes difficult to commission when every instrument, controller and service device needs a different serial path. MPC-2025 is a strong candidate to evaluate when serial density is the first architecture question. MPC-2025 uses an Intel Haswell i5-4200U processor with 4 GB memory expandable to 16 GB, and its fanless design keeps the computer layout straightforward for a cell integrator.
The defining feature is physical connectivity: MPC-2025 provides four RS232 ports and four RS485 ports. It also provides four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, VGA, HDMI, microphone input, line output, and two Gigabit LAN ports. These interfaces create a useful device-mapping starting point; they do not establish protocol or driver compatibility.
Start with a Device and Port Map
List every sensor gateway, drive, meter, barcode reader and service instrument with interface, connector, protocol assumption, cable length and isolation requirement. The four RS232 ports and four RS485 ports can then be assigned deliberately instead of being discovered during commissioning.

Keep Network and Serial Decisions Together
Dual Gigabit LAN gives the integrator two physical network paths to evaluate for machine and plant traffic. USB ports can serve local peripherals, while VGA and HDMI support display planning. Define traffic roles, authentication and service access before selecting the software stack.
Plan Storage and Expansion Before the Cell Is Built
mSATA and 2.5-inch SATA storage support allows a system-drive and local-data discussion. The two Mini-PCIe slots, GPIO and SIM slot can be evaluated for project-specific expansion, subject to module and application validation. Record the expected data, replacement method and regional connectivity requirements in the RFQ.
MPC-2025 includes one half-size Mini-PCIe slot, one full-size Mini-PCIe slot, GPIO, and a 3G/4G SIM card slot. Confirm the selected module, carrier, antenna and software path before freezing the design.
Mounting and DC Input Affect Commissioning Access
The 243 × 144 × 66 mm chassis with desktop or wall mounting gives the designer a tangible location to review. The 9–30 V DC input through a 2-pin Phoenix connector should be checked against the cabinet supply, grounding and startup sequence. Leave enough room for service tools and cable bend radius.
